BIOGRAPHY
Shafi'i school period could say a lot of trouble. When will enter high school in Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah, Shafi'i rejected because of his junior origin of Lintau Village in West Sumatra, which is considered inferior. He then signed up to the Madrasah Muallimin Muhammadiyah in the same city. In schools that scored cadres preacher Muhammadiyah, the Shafi'i school report always nice and always rated one.
Graduated from Muhammadiyah, Shafi was registered at IAIN Sunan Ampel, Surabaya, before entering the Faculty of Law, Islamic University of HOS Cokroaminoto Surakarta and eventually moved to the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Department of History Teachers' Training College of Yogyakarta. Schedule of study at Teachers' Training College set the time allowed, even though he had graduated at the age of 29 years.
Shafi S2 to study in Illinois, United States, after he graduated from the Teachers' Training College. But since her son died cause he had to leave college and return to his master's homeland. In Indonesia Shafi'i teaching several years before deciding to return to America and take courses at the Department of History, Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. He also took the S3 Islamic Thought, University of Chicago, also in America. Since in Chicago that Shafi'i began studying under the guidance of Fazlur Rahman, a Muslim reformer of Egypt, which he considered a great deal of enlightenment, including in understanding the Qur'an. One of the teachings of the Koran that really understood Shafi is no compulsion in religion.
Although little has been known since the Muhammadiyah, the new Shafi really take charge of the Islamic organization was coming home from Chicago. In 1985, he joined the Assembly Tabliq Muhammadiyah until finally he could become chairman of Muhammadiyah in 1998.
